December 8th, 1996 was the 16th anniversary of John's death. Judging from the large number of messages written here in remembrance, John is long from forgotten. You can no longer add your comments to this page, but you can read what others wrote.

Comments: I don't really know how to express my feelings about what happend or how much John did,.. He filled the world with love and hope. He's music made a whole generation to go out and scream for Peace,.. And hopefully we will continue that. The way he died is terrible, horrifying and I really feel such a great sorrow thinking about that tragic day. I can't see why someone would want to take another mans life but there is nothing to do to change that now. I don't have any memories of John since I was 3 when he died but I can tell ya about when Free As A Bird was released. They were going to show the video at 6.40 am that morning. I woke up at 5,..*G* I'd been waiting for so long and this was just SO cool. So I was just lying in my bed reading a book or something waiting for it to start. And then it did,.. I had turned off hte light in my room so I was sitting in my bed like a little kid on X-mas waiting for it to start. And when it did I just felt so happy. Johns voice filled the room and it was something so unreal about it. Here he was 15 years after his death singing with the Beatles,.. They showed that video about ten times that morning. And the radiostations copied it from the TV so that they could send it,.. And I was just walking around all day humming on that catchy tune,.. It was great,... Well I feel that through his music John will live forever and I think that this is a bit of a proof for that,.. Love and Peace, Pearl

Comments: Well, what can you say about someone that gave so much to so many? I guess you could start with the fact John and the Beatles changed the way alot of people looked and dressed, and they changed music forever. They also showed us that it was alot fun to be a famous rock band.I loved the Beatles, and maybe John just a tiny bit more, because I liked the way his mind worked(most of the time). As Harry Nilsson once said about his first meeting with John,"He was everything you hoped he would be".I never got to meet John,I still thought of him like a distant older brother sending back postcards via records, and tv appearnces. And He was always interesting, even if you didn't agree with him.Over the last week,I've been watching the Mike Douglas show reruns on VH1,and I was sitting there watching John, happy and alive again,And I quitely wondered why ANYONE would think of John as threat,or as Chapman put it "a phoney".John Lennon was NO PHONEY!He comes across on these shows as a kind and gentle soul who really wanted to help people.Chapman is the phoney.I remember that cold rainy day 16 years ago.I don't think anything has ever hurt me as much, except for losing a family member,or close friend,as finding out that John was dead.I really believe that day changed the way I looked at the world.I was a fairly optimistic 20 year old then. But, after that day,I think I became much more cynical. If somone like John Lennon, could be killed because someone hated him,who knows what the hell can happen?I can't believe it's been 16 years.just think of what John could have done in 16 years. So, what can you say?WHAT A F-CKING WASTE!John just shouldn't be dead.Maybe I'm wrong. But,the world seems to be a little colder without John Lennon in it. Who else could have done this? And in the end, he wasn't arrogant. Just a guy from Liverpool doing what he loved..CREATING Much love. Blackburn

Comments: Well, another year has passed, and now I know who you were, are, and soon will BECOME! I guess it's not easy to say goodbye.. Goodbyes were never meant to be easy.... But now, people love what you stood for, and your ideals are now loved more than ever... I wish you were here to see it! But, were you a modest man? Well, I believe you had every RIGHT to be proud! John, LOVE YOU, MISS YOU! What is there "left to say"? Oh, I WISH THIS NEVER HAPPENED TO YOU! I wish I could travel to that one and only memorial, and place more flowers and LOVE and HAPPINESS on it than ANYONE else! Would we be more understanding of each other, if you were still here to help us, guide us? -IMAGINE Jude

Comments: John has a great deal to do with my life. I wasnt alive when he died, but I fell like the world lost something that cold December night. A little part of everyone died that night along with John, those who who were born and those of us still unborn. I fell like a part of my life died, but in me and everyone out there, he lives on in all of us. So, in reality, he may be dead, but in spirit and the true meaning of life, he is where ever there is a person who wants to "give peace a chance". So let us remember on this December 8th, that it is not the death of a beautiful person, but new life to a pert of us all!!! much peace and love, Maxwell

Comments: I have come to this page as an early lament to the late great John Lennon who was shot seven times by Mark Chapman 26 years ago the eighth. I'm afraid that rock n roll has been all down hill since the loss of this great rocker( the greatest rocker of all time. and I would like to pay a silent lament to the death of the rock n roll legend, John Lennon.

Comments: a poem... You Shine On (like the moon and the stars and the sun): You were a kiss from the sunshine itself. A short spark of light that penetrated my heart, my soul. Your bright smile that now I can only see in photographs tells me "I lived a happy life. Don't be sad. Do not cry." The eyes that only you own, the life that only you led are as precious as a star shooting across the night sky leaving a trail of light that will forever shine on and on. Comments: I was two on the night of the murder. One of the worst things is that December 8 is my dad's birthday, so I have never been able to fully celebrate it. Though I don't remember that night at all, John and the Beatles have had a huge impact on me. John isn't here anymore, but his music is, and that's the most important thing. He lives in our hearts. No one was in his tree, but he was high, not low. Keep the dream alive!

Comments: 16 years ago , On Dec. 8, I was in my college dorm room in Boston, I was a Freshman, there was a bunch of people in my room as usual smoking grass and drinking Molson and probably listening to Hendrix, or Lenord Cohen, or the Dead, we all were lost in a time zone! Was it a thursday or Friday night?, and I was on the phone with a guy friend in NYC and he said "Hold on a second" And I heard him say "Oh shit!" And he said to me that he just heard on the Radio That John Lennon was Shot. I couldn't and didn't believe what he said. No body would ever joke about that .I in turn yelled to the group I was with the news and silence took over the room. They thought I was joking and then realized I would never joke about that either. The whole dorm was depressed. People were walking the halls shaking their heads turning on TV's and Saying "I can't believe it. Tonight my son Kevin, who is six, and I went to the Village Fare a coffee/dessert /lunch spot. tonight to hear a local, Jon Savino, do a piano tribute to John Lennon .I never heard anyone play so many Lennon songs live like that. I had tears. We also had a chocolate cake, cappachino, and an orange mad river soda. His death in 1980 shocked me and the world and I don1t think it ever sunk in until tonight that the world probably dosn1t realize that we lost a brilliant man, possibly the most enlightened peace activist. Ironicly he was Murdered. This world if full of beautiful people. and the deranged meenies mess it up! And you know that the wars are started and fought by men. Let us raise our boys to be peaceful and loving and maybe the world can live as one! I made my son stay to hear the songs, although he wanter to leave at 9:00 and I tell him all the time all about the Beatles. He had a Beatles poster in his roon when the was an infant! I actually cried tonight again.... Please give peace a chance.. Spread the word Diane

Comments: I was 12 years old, when I first heard of the Beatles, that was back in 1963. I have been a John fan since the first time he set foot in America, I saw him get off the airplane, and I pointed to him and said "That's the one I like!!" That was the start of the whole thing for me. I was always in his defense, no matter what he did, it was always okay. The anticipation of waiting to see him on Ed Sullivan was unreal. Everything in my life at that time was John. My Mom always said that if The Beatles were a subject in school, I would have made straight A's. I'll never forget the night he was shot. I was working nightshift, listening to my favorite radio station, I was alone, everyone was on their break, I decided to work through mine, it was around 11:00 p.m., John had been shot, at that time, they didn't even know how bad, I was stunned, I went to find someone to tell, everyone was gathered around the TV in the break room, the news said he was dead. It all seemed like a bad dream, and still does. I drove home that night, I don't actually remember how I got there, the silence was cold, I got in bed and just stared in space, like I wasn't really anywhere, finally the phone rang, it was one of my best friends, we talked, and it finally hit me, he's gone, and he wouldn't come back, but he would always be alive through his music. I miss him, I'll never forget him, and when I hear his songs I always have to smile, because that's what keeps him alive. I LOVE YOU!!! LET IT ALL SHINE ON!!! JoJo

Comments: How has John Lennon touched me. That is a hard question to answer. I would have to say that he has reached me through his music and life by introducing my to my concience. Im sure I had one before I first heard him, but it was a small part of the person I feel I have become today. John was probably the most evolved human being alive. When he first came to America he said"I want to be rich and famous", and from there he coined the phrase"give peace a chance" He is a constant reminder that we must all evolve from what we are, and that money "cant buy me love" I have a tatto on my shoulder of John so he is always with me. Strawberry fields forever is one of his best songs, but by far not my personal favorites. "In my life" remains for me his major influence. This song is from the heart with no political motivation or media jive. P.S McCartney is an asshole, who's career is nothing without Lennon. He didn't write a good song without Lennon, and never will. He lacked John's heart, and talent. We know who really wrote what.

Comments: I feel closer to John. I just got an autograph of him signed in 1980 , and it is hung above the wall of our bed. When John was killed, it was the first time that I realized how fast your life can end. I think about John alot, and I am proud we share the same first name. I believe that he is up there somewhere watching over his family with his mom and aunt, and feeling warmth from those of us that miss him so much

Comments: John Lennon has been with me in my life since I was a little kid. His music, vision, wit, and personality has amazed and surprised me as I've gradually got to know him from reading and growing up hearing his music. It's hard to describe my feelings about John in words since they are after all feelings and sensations that fill me, not concrete objective ideas. He gives me hope, warmth, and courage. John makes me think about life. He died before I knew who he was(I was very young), but he has found a place within me, just as he has in millions of people around the world. Death was just an event in his life. He changed form, but the essence of him remains the same. Thinking about John makes me realize that a person can't be erased. There was so much within John Lennon that couldn't possibly have dissapeared during those few tragic minutes. There is a flame within every person that tragedy and death can never extinguish. The flame lives on, as John's has, and can only grow and become larger.

Comments: I was 15 when John was killed. I had been a Beatlehead for years and I can still remember every detail of where I was and what was happening when the newsflash came on the TV. That moment was the end of my childhood. All of the faith and belief which I had innocently leant upon up to then was kicked away. In time the hurt has healed, but I'll always feel the sorrow of what might have been, for John, for me, for all of us. I've come to believe that the only way to come to grips with that December day is through John's own words. So many times he tried to tell us -- we have to learn to love and to forgive. 'No one's to blame, my how time flies so quickly'.

Comments: WHAT CAN I SAY ABOUT JOHN LENNON THAT HASN'T ALREADY BEEN SAID A MILLION TIMES BEFORE? JOHN LENNON WAS SUCH A REMARKABLE MAN, AND IS SOMEBODY I CAN LOVE AND ADMIRE. HIS WORK MADE SUCH AN IMPACT ON MY LIFE, ALONG WITH HIS BELIEFS AND VIEWS. JOHN LENNON WAS A DREAMER, BUT ALSO HE WAS A FIGHTER, AND THAT'S WHAT MADE HIM SO POWERFUL. HIS LEGACY IS ALL TOO OBVIOUS THESE DAYS, WITH SO MANY BANDS TRYING TO REACH BEATLE HEIGHTS. BUT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE. NOBODY WILL EVER BE 'THE NEW BEATLES' OR THE 'NEW LOHN LENNON'. THEY ARE IRREPLACEABLE. AND SO IS THE MEMORY OF JOHN LENNON. GIVE PEACE A CHANCE.

Comments: Looking upon my blank computer, I have no idea what to say. I'm moved and my emotions are just coming out. I feel anger and sadness, for 16 years ago (can you believe it?) John was murdered. I am a young fan (20) and was only 4 when he died. I, like many of the people writing comments here, have been watching all of the VH1 shows with John in the 1970's. He wasn't perfect and had many flaw, but he was human. I would have liked to meet him once. Too bad the only way I'll ever see him is through old movies and CD's. :-( Wherever you are John, I hope you can see that so many people care and still remember you even though the world may have screwed you over many times. People DO care about love and peace even if they don't show it! The world loves you. I love you! :-) Peace and love, Erin J. (a.k.a. Lovely Rita)

But I ear your voice every day. I ear your heart sound. I ear your mind sound. So, I write for you today in the same way as i would write for my best friend. I feel that I know you. Badly, it's maybe only a feeling...but if only one thing exist that i'm sure it can only be the stronger of my inconditional love for you and the stronger of my pain and my sadness when I remember that It's because of one 8 december that I would never see you alive... I'm crying on your end. I'm crying on my love. I'm crying but your still dead... I write this song for me and for you: Little girl, you follow the sun on wrong way. Do you know how you believe to stay? Do you know where? There's nowhere. How much you care... can't just say. Little girl, you laugh face the sun Do you realize that you run? that he's gone...his fame pay...Upon your head, the neons ligths his bloody death. Little girl! The nowhere man have pass away! Nowhere girl! The nowhere man is dead...Please see the rainy day..the rainy sun through the sky. Little girl! The nowhere man have pass away! Nowhere girl! Comments: John was a profound influence on my life, his work being one of the reasons I became a musician myself. He and the work he had not yet created is sadly missed. I'm sure that he had plenty more to offer the world. December 8th should be a day of reflection, peace, and dedication to all others in the human race, not a day of mourning. This December 8th, try to remember not just the man and his arts, but what he stood for and believed in. Peace and Love. Remember this and try to apply this outlook to your everyday personal contacts and relationships. Imagine that, the world might just become a better place. Brian Beatty

Comments: When I think of John, I think of his great sarcasism. He had the best comebacks in the world at those press conferences back in the 60s. And when he was 'on' and having fun he just beamed at those cameras, such quick wit and charm with an edge. He was great! It was so devastating when we lost him, I felt like a piece of my youth had been ripped away. What a so totally unnecessary thing to have to happen!! We love you John, we miss you and we'll keep listening to the music and imagining

Comments: Today, Dec 8th for me, the 7th for the majority of you, is a day that i don't think any of us can forget. Although no matter what, John's death will always fill a space in my mind, i have to realise that the space his life, his music and his words fill is much greater. I know that the tears I cry, won't just be for me, they'll be for thousands of us, they'll be for the world who lost John, but most of all they'll be for you John, for the life you lost. But, deep in my heart I have to keep remembering that the life you had is worth so much more than these tears. Although I'll never be able to forget your death, the light of your life will always overshadow that. You gave so much, and you know what? You're still giving it.... Love always, Sarah

Comments: Well, I wasn't alive when John was, and everything under the sun has been said about John already. John is an enourmous influence to me. It's silly, but even though he's not here anymore, I still feel as if he is. I think all of us 'second and third generation' beatle fans are extreemly close to John. Those of you who were alive when Lennon was may not understand this, but we feel that we know him personally, even tho' he isn't alive. If it weren't for John, I don't know where I'd be right now. As one beatle fan put it, "He can't be dead... he's kept me from dying so many times." There'll never be another one like you John, though we never met, I love you with all my heart.

Though I wasn't even born when he was ripped from this world, I think his music will forever be a part of myself. He may not have been perfect, but he is the best songwriter ever to grace this world. Comments: 16 years ago John Lennon, like millions of other in this century, was killed. HE mourned them all and, I think, would want all of us to do the same. He was also ACTIVE - trying to change a world that lets children starve and drops napalm on their mothers and homes for profit and power. If we don't pick up where he left off, what did his life really mean, after all?

I only wish I could have met you before your time on this world was up, so I could have told you how I feel...but anyhow I hope that where ever you are now you know that you will never be forgotten...and that your music is still reaching young people 16 years after the terrible tragedy that prevents you from being with us now.... THE DREAM NOT OVER.Remember: "WE CAN LIVING LIVE IN PEACE, IT'S EASY IF YOU TRY. YOU MAY SAY I'M DREAMER, BUT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE. I HOPE SOMEDAY YOU'LL JOIN US, AND THE WORLD WILL LIVE AS ONE" From a Brazilian John Lennon Fan, To the Brazil and all the world.

Comments: I Was There...i grew up with the Beatles in the 60s. running to the store as soon as the new albums came out. dropping ACID when they dropped ACID,going to Gurus when they went to the Gurus. when JOHN and YOKO left the group and became 2 Virgins i was there with them...they fasted for Peace on Thanksgiving,i fasted for Peace with them.it was magik.i was in NY and so were they. On Dec.8,1980 i was at home here in California. the bulletin came on TV that monday night and i gasped in pain. my heart stopped. SHOT? JOHN? HE CAN'T BE GONE.i spent the next days travelling to NYC.my own pilgrimage,to the scene of the CRIME. to the 10 minutes of silence in Central Park that following sunday. 400,000 of us in the park, the bandstand was decorated with XMAS green in Garlands and the portrait of JOHN in his NY Tshirt. it was a gift from YOKO.that brillance of the worldwide 10minute silence.in NYC!IMAGINE IT! it was HOLY.the temperature was -10 degrees that day because of the wind chill. BUT IT WAS HOLY. the sky was cloudy and when the silence broke with huge speakers blasting IMAGINE the sun actually came thru the clouds. The day JOHN was killed was the saddest day of my life. i've never gotten over losing JOHN.i still cry when i hear songs from Double Fantasy. the best part of the experience was when YOKO in her incredible artistic wisdom, gave us all agreat gift. On Valentines Day 2 months after JOHN died,YOKO sent Barbara Walters a thank you for the fans. it was played on 20/20 that night. it was the 1st view we had of the video WOMAN. this was before VCRS, before MTV. that video was such a healing gift to us then. and how YOKO was able to put those pictures of JOHN together that soon after JOHNS death i will never know. the mark of an artist. JOHNS picture lying looking up for the IMAGINE cover turning into (many of you will not know this) JOHNS picture lying on the slab in the morgue.that picture was stolen by a photographer for the Enquirer and appeared on their cover the following week. its chilling. i was there,i'm still there,i will always be there.WITH YOU IN THE WORK, JOHN AND YOKO. Thank You for all the endless memories and love.love is all you need, thats my philosophy and i'm sticking to it :-) IMAGINE if JOHN were here now. he'd love the internet! Thanks,Sam. Great work here.

Comments: It's kind of funny that John Lennon means so much to me. After all, I wasn't alive during his most productive periods; in fact, I was only 9 days old when he was killed. And it's only been in the last year that I've discovered what a genius he truly was. Although I wasn't on this earth to experience the music and art of John Lennon when it was fresh and new, that doesn't mean I love it any less than any other fan. In fact, I'm angry that because of one person, I and so many other young people can't see John creating magic. I'm not an eloquent person myself, but I've heard someone else put into words exactly what i feel: It's sad that a man who fought for peace was taken from us all so violently. Even though John is no longer with us physically, he will never be forgotten. To paraphrase his own words: he'll shine on, like the moon, and the stars, and the sun.

Comments: Although I wasn't alive when the Beatles split, I've been raised on their music. My father, the Perenial Beatles fan updated his collection of music when C.D's became standard. He replaced every album he owned with a C.D. Providing an unblemished reproducition of recordings for me to become lost in. And that is what the Beatles mean to me, their music is capable of consuming your soul, making everything else seem insignificant and unimportant. Whenever I feel my life has begun to course down a destructive path I return to the sermons of John Lennon. Finding solace in his naive vision of love. Hoping only for the possiblility of it's truth. If the world felt safe in relenquishing it's control to love, then the Beatles would be God's, and Lennon would still be alive.

Comments: When I think of John, I remember the words he sang, that made me question the world and made me smile. John gave me a hope of what could be, opened me up to new ideas, and at the same time entertained me with his humor and silliness. :) He's contribution to society was a great one, and he has taught me, and so many others the meaning of Love and Peace...and for this he will always hold a place in our hearts.

Comments: The sixteenth anniversary approaches. More pointless reminiscence to bear. Perhaps someone, somewhere benefits. The rest don't really care. They'll never feel our inner sadness. Nor understand the silent tear For the Pied Piper who got too far ahead, And left his children here. We can only think of what might have been, Left in the wake of his merry dance. The good grow old gracefully, John The great don't get the chance.

Comments: I'm only 14 years old, so I wasn't around when John was here. He is the greatest guy to me. I idolize him. He is my hero. Even though he has no clue who I am, I keep his life alive even though he is dead. I tell everyone how wonderful he is and play his music nonstop. It was a terrible thing that happened to him and I get a little teary just thinking about it. He did not deserve it whatsoever. I have many pictures of him in my room, and I am going to mourn his death on sunday. All I can say is "Why?" Why John? Why did he have to die? I Love You John with all my heart and you will always be with us. You have been there for me so many times, now its my turn to be there for you.

You made it big, you realized your position, and you made it your goal to get the message of peace and love out to everyone around the world. Today, 16 years after your passing, more people than ever before know about your message. When I hear "So this is Christmas... and what have you done?" I get all choked up. Comments: The 8th of December 1996 (USA) / 9th of December 1996 (UK) marks the 16th anniversary of John Lennon's assassination. Despite the fact that more than one and a half decades have passed I still mourn his loss. I miss him greatly and his absence has left a void that can never, ever be filled. I'm certain that I can safely state that my feelings are shared by all of those who genuinely loved and admired him. He was a rare human being, truly one of a kind. John Lennon was an infinitely and a profoundly gifted person. His genius shone forth brilliantly in everything he did. Musician, lyricist, singer, artist, actor, humourist, political and peace activist, and writer. all of which were accomplished with sterling precision and golden perfectionism. He never did anything half-heartedly but rather put his entire self into all of his work. He was indubitably a dedicated man who sincerely cared about humankind. He was the leader of the '60's and the peace movement. Young people at that time looked up to him and many fans considered him the 'messiah' of that changing, turbulent, and radical decade. He was greatly admired and loved by people from every nation and from every walk of life. Some of his unique characteristics that endeared John to us were his delightfully weird and hilarious sense of humour;his comic facial expressions ----John Lennon was a natural-born ham; his penchant for the absurd; his political candidness; his trend-setting style of music; his succinct writing ability in lyrics and literature; his handsome voice; his distinctive artistic flair; his eccentric clothes fashion; and his avant-garde hair styles. All of these and much, much more are what made John Lennon, John Lennon. John Lennon shares an equal position on the pinnacle of success along with the virtuosi, Charles Dickens and Wolfgang Mozart. He, like they, achieved the status of master artiste and legend in his own time. It is said that the Beatles changed the world. Yes, that is to a certain degree true but since there would be no Beatles without their founder and leader, John Lennon, who as a result of his belief in them and himself and his promise "to take them to the top" single-handedly changed the world, not just the musical world, but the entire world. The world is a much better and more beautiful place for having known John Lennon. And so are we. We love you, John, and we miss you. Thank you for enriching our lives. God bless you and now you are part of God and therefore eternal. As with Dickens and Mozart, John Lennon belongs to all the world. The week following his assassination, Time Magazine's cover was a picture of John with the words, "The Day the Music Died". That was a most tragic day for all of us and even though that has left deep scars, we can take consolation for on that day John Lennon and his music commenced living on in our hearts and souls. He would have wanted it that way. IMAGINE.

Comments: I'm only 17 years old, and a singer/songwriter myself. sometimes when i'm singing I know that a little piece of John spills out on me. When I write a song I know John is right there with me whispering lyrics in my ear. Even though I never met the man, I can feel his spirit with me everday blessing me with his inspiration. I know for a fact that every generation from 1980 on will have a little piece of John lennon inside of them.

Comments: When I woke up this morning and checked my calender, great waves of emotion filled my body and left me in tears. Although I wasn't alive when John was murdered, like many others, I feel as if I know him like a friend through his music and work. All of us must carry his message of peace and love to those that we meet, so that one day our world will be one without pain or fear, prejudice or hatred. John - I don't really know what to say to a man who has given me so much. You have changed my life forever; if it wasn't for you who knows what kind of a future I would have made for myself. Thank you and I hope that you are at peace, wherever you are. Your spirit will not be forgotten. I LOVE YOU!

But me and probably you love him, his music and today, being the 16th anniversary we may even cry and be sad but look to the good things the best things that made the man a man, a family man, a music man, and a beatle man. But all we need is love and so we love you John Winston Lennon and your songs and life will be forever held in our hearts. I hope one day to meet you at the big pearly gates, I think I'll give you a hug then. From Adam and Friends. (please feel free to email if you want to)
